Value of 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar The 1881 Morgan silver dollar was struck in large quantities at the Philadelphia mint. Quite a few bags were released in the 1950s and 1960s; indeed, so many that in 1955 one dealer offered rolls of 20 Uncirculated coins for $25, equivalent to $1.25 per coin. Today, circulated specimens are very common.

The 1881-O Morgan dollar saw much of its $5.7 million mintage enter circulation. The economic recovery after the Panic of 1873 increased the demand for currency, and New Orleans was best situated to serve the South. The New Orleans Mint had to increase silver dollar production over the scheduled amount to keep up with demand.
The Value of a 1881-O Morgan Dollar
Even though most 1881-O Morgan dollars entered circulation, examples in low- to mid-Mint State are easy to acquire. Since the finest known 1881-O Morgans are MS66 (40-ish graded) and MS66+ (9 graded), most collectors have to settle for MS65. The relative rarity of this grade explains the tenfold increase in price between the MS65 for this date.
The strike of 1881-O Morgan dollar varies. Similar to most New Orleans mintages, cherrypicking is advised.
